Webinar: Leveraging CyVerse for Large-scale Spatial Analysis

OCTOBER 27, 2017     1 PM EDT, noon CDT, 11 AM MDT, 10 AM PDT

Over the past year, CyVerse has extended its cyberinfrastructure to host an advanced Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI), a critical component of applied data science that adds new dimensions to the life sciences research that CyVerse enables. There are now dozens of potential applications for Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and SDI on CyVerse, including but not limited to: life and earth sciences, human systems and infrastructure, agriculture, forestry, marine and coastal habitats, waterways, fisheries, and range management. Geospatial data are an interactive extension to traditional cartography; GIS can be visible or hidden, and statistical analyses can be conducted at any time and at any scale. GIS software and apps - ranging from command line to graphic user interfaces (GUI) that run on the user's laptop, workstation or even cloud and HPC - allow CyVerse users at all levels to exploit this new SDI capability in their analyses.

In this Focus Forum webinar, we will demonstrate how you can use CyVerse's Data Store, Discovery Environment, and Atmosphere to do everything from simple GIS tasks, such as generating maps, to complex multi-container jobs running on hardware both operated by and outside of CyVerse. This webinar will briefly cover GIS data science applications of R and RStudio, Python and Jupyter (with ArcPy), ESRI ArcGIS Portal, and OpenSource GIS including the OSGEO Foundation QGIS, PyQGIS, and Docker and Singularity container technology on Atmosphere and XSEDE Jetstream.

Focus Forum webinars are offered on various topics and are designed to enhance users' experience with CyVerse tools and platforms. They give users an opportunity to interact with CyVerse staff and community members to learn about new tools, discuss "best practices" for performing analyses and troubleshooting any potential difficulties, and connect with the community. During the year, topics may focus on any CyVerse science area or service, or using and developing any platform. Users may suggest and vote for webinar topics through the Ask Forum.

Who Should Attend?

This webinar is open to people who are using the CyVerse resources and want to learn more about the specific topic. Users are encouraged to post questions and problems encountered to the Ask Forum for discussion during the webinar.
