It's impossible for a page like this to give you exact advice, so at this point, it's time to learn more about the different platforms CyVerse offers. Of course, you don't have to choose to work with just one platform—you can use any platform, any time. This list is not exhaustive as most platforms can do many different things; for example, you can analyze image data in BisQue or in an Atmosphere instance. Here are a few tips about where to start learning and working with CyVerse.

I don't have much experience working at the command line...

Recommendation: Start with the Discovery Environment. The DE has hundreds of bioinformatics applications you can access via an online graphical interface. You can see a full list of applications, including those for RNA-Seq, genome assembly, phylogenetics, GWAS, and more. You can also integrate almost any command-line application and use it as an app in the DE. Analyses in the DE run on powerful computing clusters and HPC services. The DE is also the easiest way to manage and share data.

I am comfortable working with Linux...

Recommendation: Start with Atmosphere. The Atmosphere cloud is the largest and most easy to use public cloud system for life sciences. You can select from more than 100 virtual machine images and then create your own personal instance, configured with the processing power and memory you need. You have full control over your virtual machine, and once you connect your instance to the Data Store, the sky is the limit!

I want to analyze image data...

Recommendation: Use BisQue. BisQue is a powerful, extensible platform that supports more than 100 image formats. You can examine very large images with its tiling display features. Best of all, you can manage image metadata to organize and search within your collection, and use existing tools or bring your own tools via BisQue's APIs to analyze your data.

I want to develop new software, workflows, or tools...

Recommendation: Use the CyVerse Science APIs. The best part of cyberinfrastructure is that you can extend and expand it to solve new problems. You should learn more about how CyVerse's Science APIs can enable your research. You should also learn about how our Powered by CyVerse and Science Support programs can further enable solutions.

I want to teach bioinformatics to my students...

Recommendation: Take the DNA Subway. DNA Subway takes bioinformatics workflows for genome annotation, DNA Barcoding, and RNA-Seq, and wraps them into classroom-friendly workflows. Students can get their own CyVerse account and begin analyzing data and sharing results.
