Backyard path wonderland at Paxson Hill Farm, half 3

February 15, 2022

My detour to Paxson Hill Farm‘s stunning and imaginative gardens in New Hope, Pennsylvania, proved to be a spotlight of my huge street journey final October. Right here’s Half 3 of my tour. Click on right here for Half 1 and Half 2.

Railroad tie path

Leaving the hobbit home (see Half 2), I adopted the trail previous grasses and a Japanese maple that was simply turning orangey purple with the altering seasons.

The juncture of two paths supplied a possibility for artistic paving, with railroad ties including a beachy boardwalk really feel.

Trying left I noticed the crossroads once more (first proven in Half 1) — a round garden from which 6 or 7 backyard paths department like spokes on a wheel.

The kinetic sculpture by Jeff Kahn known as Bare Alien. However I’m right here for these attractive phormium planters.

Every one is jam-packed with a sunset-hued phormium, ‘Sticks on Hearth’ euphorbia, yellow bulbine, silver ponyfoot, fishhooks senecio possibly, and pink pelargonium. And possibly a pink kangaroo paws protruding on the left facet?

From the crossroads, right here’s how the trail entrance seems, with the planters serving as a gateway. This was the trail I discovered most attractive in Half 1, and now we’re going to discover it.

Angels are singing, proper? Let’s go!

Aaaaand let’s cease and look.

Blackberry lilies…

…and chocolate cosmos and orange lantana, oh my.

Gleaming blackberry lily seed clusters

Which technique to go? Additionally, are these the tidiest paths ever, or what? This was close to the tip of the day, thoughts you, and there’s not one fallen leaf on the paths. How??

Now we’re again to the railroad tie path that I confirmed on the prime of this publish. One other phormium combo in a purple pot echoes the wealthy hue of Japanese blood grass tracing the curving stroll.

It’s a beautiful container, and it marks a niche within the path that enables water to move via.

Bridge Backyard

Water performs an enormous position within the Bridge Backyard, named for a black, arching, Asian-style bridge that spans a cascading waterfall.

Blood grass lapping on the boardwalk path jogs my memory of a flowing stream as effectively.

However this clumping grass is my favourite: ‘Moudry’ black pennisetum, particularly paired with the larger bottlebrush foliage of pines.

Isn’t it great? Now I’m googling if ‘Moudry’ grows effectively in Austin…

The railroad tie path steps as much as a small deck…

…with black motel chairs overlooking a pond and the black bridge.

A fantastic scene

Again to these pennisetums although

I can’t get sufficient of those fuzzy, charcoal-mauve bottlebrush plumes. Paired with chocolate-pink phormiums and a burgundy shrub, plus forest-green yews, they’re moody perfection.

And I imply, have a look at this: fastigiate plum yews, blue-potted phormiums, and black pennisetum. I don’t know the small, dark-green plant within the foreground, nevertheless it provides great texture and hits the precise shade notes too.

Black candy potato vine makes the proper spiller for the turquoise pot. And no, my fellow Central Texans, I don’t assume we will have phormium. Blame our Gulf Coast humidity and steamy summer time nights, which additionally soften away our kangaroo paws desires.

Let’s admire this complete combo — with large miscanthus grass flowering within the background — one final time.

Grass path

The backyard is alive with the motion of grasses in autumn finery.

Extra pennisetum bottlebrushes

Alternating patches of dark- and light-flowering grasses, with the darkish, sinuous trunks of a weepy tree

Hedge maze

Within the again nook of the backyard, I discovered a hedge maze. I wandered for a minute or two, however, anxious I used to be working out of time earlier than the backyard closed, and fearing I’d get misplaced in there, I turned again. Completionist that I’m, I want I’d had time to totally discover it.

Rock backyard

A small rock backyard lies between the maze and a shade backyard.

Asian woodland

Shade-loving hostas crowd the gravel path, immersing you in lushness. A stream cuts the trail, crossed by a stone plank bridge.

The stream originates from a small pool with a low, effervescent fountain that creates the phantasm of a rocky spring.

The water flows into the pond with the black bridge.

A better view

Koi meander within the pond, which is overhung by the purple skirt of a sprawling Japanese maple.

The autumn shade was simply getting getting into mid-October. I think about late October or early November should be when it peaks.

The wandering paths invite you to lose your self within the backyard.

Discover how the perimeter is screened with dense foliage, hiding what should be open fields or homes past.

A contemplative house

One other stunning view, with some actual fall shade

Identical scene, totally different angle

Japanese forest grass flows alongside the trail’s edge.

Being a shade backyard, the woodland is much less showy than sunnier areas. However its peaceable greenery accented with Asian backyard sculpture feels tranquil and wonderful.

Pale pink Japanese anemones host a tiny crab spider mendacity in wait.

And one closing vignette from the stunning gardens of Paxson Hill Farm.
