Advocates for City Agriculture Proclaims Capability Constructing Grant

Advocates for City Agriculture (AUA), in partnership with Meals:Land:Alternative (FLO) is happy to announce the awardees of the 2021 Capability Constructing Grant.

It is a continuation of the sequence of grant alternatives AUA launched since 2020 on the offset of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, AUA awarded over $200,000 in grant funds to over 80 Chicagoland rising operations via the COVID-19 Farmer Help Grant and the primary spherical of Capability Constructing Grant. Whereas the COVID-19 Farmer Help Grant addressed the instant monetary wants of city growers within the midst of the pandemic, the Capability Constructing Grant continues to help Chicagoland city farm companies working to increase and scale up their operations and work towards sustainability.

“The AUA crew is humbled to have the chance to proceed to help the growers who’re nourishing our communities,” stated Bea Fry, Growth Coordinator of Advocates for City Agriculture. “On the heart of our crew values and the values that information our Capability Constructing Grant is the understanding that justice and reparations are essential to reimagine our present meals system – with respect for the earth as our information. We’re excited to announce this spherical of grantees who embody these values all through the work they do in our communities.”

The Capability Constructing Grant program is funded via AUA’s partnership with FLO and displays a set of values that had been established by a cohort of Chicago city farmers. The grant continues to serve farm operations that are:

  • Small Operations — lower than 5 acres and/or have an working funds of lower than $250,000
  • Owned and/or led by BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, Individuals of Coloration), trans, non-binary, and/or gender non conforming individuals.
  • Offering meals and different companies for low-income communities

The Capability Constructing Grant supplied grant awards ranging between $2,500-$20,000, with purposes being reviewed by an exquisite group of meals programs educators, growers, and advocates, together with:

  • Jesse Schaffer of The Speaking Farm 
  • Gina Roxas of Trickster Cultural Middle
  • Azizah Ali-Ashraf of A&P Paradise Farm 
  • Erin Kwiatkowski of a nationwide nonprofit  
  • Nora Bryne of a nonprofit well being heart 
  • Erana Jackson Taylor of Ujamaa Co-op

2021 Capability Constructing Grant Recipients:

$20,000 Awardees: Obodo Farms, La Villita Park Group Farm 

$10,000 Awardees: Cicero Group Farm, Rising Options Farm, Sistas In The Village, Reclaiming Our Roots

$5,000 Awardees: Ever Favor Farms, International Backyard Refugee Coaching Farm, Sunflower Soule Farm, Metropolis Farm Chicago 

$2,500 Awardee: Hinata Farm
