Kaizuka! Bless you.

I first met Juniperus chinensis ‘Kaizuka’ on a mid Seventies pupil subject journey to Florida with the late JC Raulston. As our caravan of College vans crossed from Georgia into Florida, these junipers out of the blue appeared in all places. Though, I used to be unfamiliar with this architecturally fascinating specimen, I used to be in love….regardless of it being widespread because the proverbial dust in Florida landscapes. In all places from gasoline stations to the poorest dwelling appeared to have at the least one. Most locals know Juniperus ‘Kaizuka’ as both Juniperus ‘Torulosa’ or Hollywood Juniper…a typical identify it gained as a consequence of its ubiquitous presence round Los Angeles. It seems that Juniperus ‘Kaizuka’ was an introduction from Japan’s Yokohama Nursery previous to 1920. Our oldest crops at JLBG are actually 33 years previous, and now measure 24′ tall x 16′ extensive. The one pictured beneath is a brand new 5 12 months previous planting in a brand new part of the backyard. Forty-five years later and nonetheless in love!
