Miami’s Gilded Age Property — Enchanted Gardens

After Deering died in 1925, Vizcaya was finally handed all the way down to his two nieces. The property suffered main injury from two hurricanes, which destroyed many backyard statues and furnishings. In 1945, the household transferred the Lagoon Gardens and the southern grounds to the Diocese of St. Augustine and Mercy Hospital. It opened as a public museum in 1953. Restoration efforts proceed on the mansion, gardens, and historic Village. In 2021, Vizcaya restored its historic Rose Backyard, which had been destroyed within the Nice Hurricane of 1926. Eighty-five vintage roses have been chosen from the Vintage Rose Emporium in Texas, making certain that the brand new vegetation might be appropriate for Miami’s tropical local weather.

Vizcaya: 3251 S. Miami Ave., Miami, FL 33129. 305-250-9133. vizcaya.org
Vizcaya is open Thursday–Monday, 9:30–5:30
